Feature: Flying solo
Following just over a year of record issuance under the government guarantee, Australian banks will have to live without state support from the end of March. While smaller local banks and subsidiaries of international operations look set to face challenges in replacing guaranteed funding, the real questions will come down the track when serious guaranteed maturities start to kick in.

Feature: Toughening up
IOSCO’s standards on transparency, disclosure and aligning issuer and investor interests in unregulated markets are set to transform the global securitisation business. This tough new approach will inevitably impact the Australian issuer landscape, with some market participants concerned that the need for international consistency will mean Aussie firms will pay a price for the past sins of their international peers.

Feature: Carpe diem for corporates
Despite an improved year for issuance in 2009, for Australia’s corporate borrowers the domestic bond market is still the poor relation of both its US equivalent and the local loans universe. With myriad moving parts in place it is difficult to tell whether Australia is seeing solid progress or missing a window of opportunity.
