KangaNews Fixed-Income Research Poll 2019: results announced

KangaNews is proud to reveal the results of its 2019 Fixed-Income Research Poll, in which Australian institutional investors are asked to vote for the best research providers across a range of sectors. The ninth iteration of the poll has a familiar look across most categories – consistency of performance is a hallmark of this survey – but there are still a clutch of changes at the top of specific categories.

Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CommBank) dominates once more, taking out the top spot in the best overall research provider category – a trophy it has held for six years running. The overall category is more competitive in 2019 than it has been in recent years, however, with National Australia Bank (NAB) in particular closing the gap at the top.

At the same time, CommBank also retains first place in an additional five categories: best research and analysis on Australian government and semi-government; supranational, sovereign and agency; corporate issuers; trade ideas; and relative-value research.

There are other notable success stories, coming from NAB, Citi and Westpac Institutional Bank (Westpac).

In addition to retaining the top spot in macroeconomic research and analysis, NAB finishes in joint first place for best research on Australian government and semi-governments and, for the first time, takes out the trophy for the foreign-exchange category. Elsewhere, NAB places second in the overall category for 2019, enters the top five for research on global and on Asian markets, and improves its performance in almost every other category – more than any other bank – relative to its 2018 finishes. NAB is also the clear standout as most improved research house as recognised by investor votes.

Westpac is another improving story in the 2019 poll, with higher-place finishes in seven categories relative to 2018. Westpac retains the structured-finance research and analysis crown it took in 2018 from CommBank and moves into the top five for trade ideas and global research.

The only other bank to win a category in 2019 is Citi, which holds onto global research for the third consecutive year and wins best research on Asian markets, a category which has been held by ANZ since it was first included in the poll in 2014.

Full coverage of the KangaNews Fixed-Income Research Poll 2019, including commentary from category winners, will appear in the June-July edition of KangaNews magazine.
