About Canada Pension Plan Investment Board

Canada Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP Investments) is a professional investment management organisation that manages the Canada Pension Plan in the best interest of the more than 21 million contributors and beneficiaries of the fund.

To build diversified portfolios of assets, investments are made around the world in public and private equity, real estate, infrastructure and fixed income. Headquartered in Toronto with offices in Hong Kong, London, Luxembourg, Mumbai, New York City, San Francisco, São Paulo and Sydney, CPP Investments is governed and managed independently of the Canada Pension Plan and at arm’s length from governments. At 31 March 2022, the fund totalled C$539 billion.

Sustainable funding strategy

In 2022, CPP Investments announced its commitment to achieve net-zero GHG emissions across all scopes for the portfolio and operations by 2050.

The fund has also been publishing an annual report on sustainable investing since 2008 and has been a UN-supported Principles for Responsible Investment signatory since 2005, which has guided and informed sustainable investment policies.

The green bond programme aligns with the fund’s sustainability objectives. In 2018, CPP Investments was the world’s first pension fund to issue green bonds. CPP Investments has issued green bonds in AUD, CAD, EUR and USD. Four benchmark transactions and three private placements totalling in excess of C$5.8 billion since inception have provided its global investor base an opportunity to participate in the transition to a low-carbon economy. Currently, there are six outstanding bond lines, totalling in excess of C$5.2 billion equivalent.
